What our timber fire-rated screens service includes in Essex

The rating depends on the timber species and density, frame sections, bead profiles, fixings and the glazing seals used in the test. We build timber screens to a tested specification, or to a formal assessment, and finish them without compromising the intumescent details.

  • Fire glass with the specified intumescent glazing system
  • Over-panels, side panels and borrowed lights
  • Painted, stained or lacquered finishes

What to check before ordering in Essex

Moisture and movement

Timber frames need dry conditions on site and acclimatisation before glazing to avoid movement around the glass.

Insulating glass weight

Heavier insulating glass may need larger sections; we confirm the frame can carry the chosen build-up.

Species and density count

Timber screens are tested with specific species and minimum densities. Softwood substitutions or thinner sections can fall outside the evidence.

Towns we cover in Essex

We cover timber fire-rated screens in Southend-on-Sea and across Essex, including Basildon, Colchester, Chelmsford, Harlow.

England rules for fire glazing

England Which rules apply?

Building work in England is covered by the Building Regulations 2010, with fire safety guidance in Approved Document B and impact safety guidance for glazing in Approved Document K.

Once a building is in use, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to maintain fire safety measures, including fire-resisting glazing. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 add duties for multi-occupied residential buildings, including fire door checks in buildings over 11 metres.

In higher-risk buildings, broadly 18 metres or seven storeys with two or more homes, the Building Safety Regulator is the building control authority. England is also phasing out BS 476 references from Approved Document B, with the remaining fire-resistance references due to go in September 2029.

Questions from Essex clients

Can timber screens be fire-rated?

Yes. Hardwood screens are tested to 30 and 60 minutes in many configurations, with the right glass, beads and seals.

Which timbers are used?

Dense hardwoods are typical; the exact species depends on the tested specification. We confirm species and density on the drawings.

Can you upgrade an old timber screen?

Sometimes. If the frame can be shown to be suitable, we can replace non-rated glass and add the correct seals and beads. Where it cannot, replacement is the honest answer.

Do you cover all of Essex?

Yes. We take enquiries from across Essex, including Southend-on-Sea and Basildon, Colchester, Chelmsford, Harlow, and arrange surveys to suit your programme.
