Fire-rated glazing questions
Answers about how we work, coverage, evidence and the most common technical questions.
Frequently asked questions
Do you cover the whole of the UK?
Yes. We arrange surveys and installation across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and design to the building rules of the nation the building is in.
Who carries out the installation?
Work is carried out by specialist fire glazing installers working under S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, which contracts with you and is responsible for the work.
Do you hold third-party certification?
We do not claim scheme membership on this site. We install tested systems to the manufacturer's evidence and hand over the evidence references so building control and your fire risk assessor can check them. If your project requires a certificated installer, tell us at quote stage.
Is the survey free?
Initial site surveys for quoted installation work are free and without obligation. Standalone condition surveys with a written report are chargeable; see our prices page.
What do I get at handover?
A schedule of the glazed elements installed or repaired, the classifications, glass marks, evidence references and photographs of seals and fixings before they were closed up.
How quickly can you start?
Small repairs depend mainly on glass availability; integrity glass is usually quicker to supply than insulating glass. Made-to-measure screens depend on drawings, approvals and fabrication.
Are your prices fixed?
After survey we give a fixed written quote for the agreed scope. Guide prices on this site are for budgeting.
Do prices include VAT?
Most fire glazing work is commercial, so prices are shown excluding VAT. Domestic customers should add VAT at 20%; the prices page shows both.
Can you work out of hours?
Yes. Evening, weekend and holiday working can be arranged, usually at a different rate.
Do you supply glass only?
Our core service is supply and installation, because the rating depends on installation. Trade supply can be quoted on request.
What is the difference between E, EW and EI fire glass?
E is integrity only: it stops flames and hot gases passing for the rated time. EW adds a limit on radiated heat through the glass. EI adds insulation, keeping the unexposed face below set temperature rises so people can pass it safely. The number after the letters is the time in minutes.
Can I cut a vision panel into a fire door?
Only under the door manufacturer's or certification scheme's instructions. Otherwise the door's rating may no longer be valid.
Is Georgian wired glass fire-rated?
It can provide integrity in the right frame, typically for 30 minutes and sometimes longer in tested systems, but it does not insulate, and plain wired glass usually lacks an impact safety classification.
Can a survey confirm my glazing is compliant?
It can confirm what is visible and recorded, and identify defects. Proving a rating may need manufacturer evidence or an assessment from a test body.
