Integrity fire glass, classified E, stops flames and hot gases passing for the rated time but does not limit the heat coming through. EW glass adds a cap on the heat radiated through the glass. Both are thinner, lighter and cheaper than fully insulated glass.
Integrity glass costs a fraction of insulated glass and fits slimmer frames, which is why specifying it correctly matters.
Integrity-only glass may be acceptable in some fire-resisting partitions, screens and doors, often at high level, within the limits national guidance sets. Compartment walls normally need insulating (EI) glazing.
E glass gets hot in a fire. Furniture or stored materials beside it can ignite from radiated heat.
Whether the building is in central Cambridge or the wider CB21, CB2, CB3, CB1, CB4, CB5 districts, we can survey and quote. We also cover Newmarket, Ely, Huntingdon. Peterborough, around 48 km from Cambridge, is the largest town in the same coverage area.
We can phase work in Cambridge around residents, staff or pupils, with out-of-hours options.
You receive the classification references, glass marks and installation photographs for your fire safety records.
After survey you get a fixed written quote for the agreed scope, so Cambridge budgets are not open-ended.
Building work in England is covered by the Building Regulations 2010, with fire safety guidance in Approved Document B and impact safety guidance for glazing in Approved Document K.
Once a building is in use, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to maintain fire safety measures, including fire-resisting glazing. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 add duties for multi-occupied residential buildings, including fire door checks in buildings over 11 metres.
In higher-risk buildings, broadly 18 metres or seven storeys with two or more homes, the Building Safety Regulator is the building control authority. England is also phasing out BS 476 references from Approved Document B, with the remaining fire-resistance references due to go in September 2029.
Integrity fire glass applies to many building types in Cambridge, including industrial units and care homes.
