Insulated fire glass, classified EI, is glazing that maintains integrity and keeps the temperature rise on the non-fire side within set limits for the rated time. It is usually made of several glass panes bonded with interlayers that foam into an insulating barrier when heated, or with a clear gel that absorbs heat.
EI testing limits the average temperature rise on the unexposed face to 140°C and any single point to 180°C, which is why people can pass it.
Each step up in rating adds layers, so EI 120 is far thicker and heavier than EI 30. The frame has to be designed for it.
Modern EI glass is clear in normal use, with high light transmission at lower ratings.
In Scotland, building work needs a building warrant under the Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004, with fire guidance in Section 2 of the Building Standards Technical Handbooks rather than Approved Documents.
For relevant premises, the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006 place duties on the duty holder to maintain fire safety measures, which include fire-resisting glazing.
Scottish guidance has its own approach to escape routes and compartmentation, so glazing designs are checked against the Technical Handbooks and the warrant drawings.
Whether the building is in central Renfrew or the wider PA4, G14, G13, G52, PA3, G15 districts, we can survey and quote. We also cover Clydebank, Paisley, Bearsden. Renfrew is about 5 km from Paisley, the largest town in our Renfrewshire and Inverclyde coverage.
If an existing frame in a Renfrew building has no traceable evidence, we say so and price the options rather than guess.
After survey you get a fixed written quote for the agreed scope, so Renfrew budgets are not open-ended.
Designs follow the building and fire safety rules that apply in Scotland, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
We can survey and quote for schools and colleges, care homes and other building types in Renfrew.
Only products approved for external use, usually in a sealed unit with UV protection.
It is a multi-layer product with specialist interlayers, and the frame and installation must suit its weight.
Survey timing in Renfrew depends on access, the size of the building and how urgent the defect is. Tell us your deadline when you enquire and we will confirm a date before you commit.
Yes. We plan phasing, out-of-hours work and temporary protection so the building can stay in use where the fire strategy allows.
