Insulated fire glass, classified EI, is glazing that maintains integrity and keeps the temperature rise on the non-fire side within set limits for the rated time. It is usually made of several glass panes bonded with interlayers that foam into an insulating barrier when heated, or with a clear gel that absorbs heat.
EI testing limits the average temperature rise on the unexposed face to 140°C and any single point to 180°C, which is why people can pass it.
When heated, the interlayers turn opaque and expand, forming an insulating shield. After a fire the glass will need replacing.
Modern EI glass is clear in normal use, with high light transmission at lower ratings.
Survey visits can be arranged anywhere in Eastleigh, including the SO50, SO53, SO18 districts, and in nearby Southampton, Winchester, Totton. Southampton, around 8 km from Eastleigh, is the largest town in the same coverage area.
You receive the classification references, glass marks and installation photographs for your fire safety records.
If an existing frame in a Eastleigh building has no traceable evidence, we say so and price the options rather than guess.
Every quote in Eastleigh identifies the tested system: frame, glass, beads, seals and fixings, within its pane-size limits.
Building work in England is covered by the Building Regulations 2010, with fire safety guidance in Approved Document B and impact safety guidance for glazing in Approved Document K.
Once a building is in use, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to maintain fire safety measures, including fire-resisting glazing. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 add duties for multi-occupied residential buildings, including fire door checks in buildings over 11 metres.
We can survey and quote for schools and colleges, industrial units and other building types in Eastleigh.
