Insulated fire glass, classified EI, is glazing that maintains integrity and keeps the temperature rise on the non-fire side within set limits for the rated time. It is usually made of several glass panes bonded with interlayers that foam into an insulating barrier when heated, or with a clear gel that absorbs heat.
Our Greater London coverage takes in Pimlico (SW1, SW8, SW1A, W1M, SW1X, SE11) and the neighbouring towns of Westminster, Battersea, Chelsea. Pimlico sits within our Greater London coverage, alongside Westminster.
Some EI products are internal only. External use needs a product and edge seal approved for UV and weather.
When heated, the interlayers turn opaque and expand, forming an insulating shield. After a fire the glass will need replacing.
Modern EI glass is clear in normal use, with high light transmission at lower ratings.
Building work in England is covered by the Building Regulations 2010, with fire safety guidance in Approved Document B and impact safety guidance for glazing in Approved Document K.
Once a building is in use, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to maintain fire safety measures, including fire-resisting glazing. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 add duties for multi-occupied residential buildings, including fire door checks in buildings over 11 metres.
In higher-risk buildings, broadly 18 metres or seven storeys with two or more homes, the Building Safety Regulator is the building control authority. England is also phasing out BS 476 references from Approved Document B, with the remaining fire-resistance references due to go in September 2029.
You receive the classification references, glass marks and installation photographs for your fire safety records.
If an existing frame in a Pimlico building has no traceable evidence, we say so and price the options rather than guess.
After survey you get a fixed written quote for the agreed scope, so Pimlico budgets are not open-ended.
Sector guides below cover blocks of flats, schools and colleges and other buildings in Pimlico.
The glazing system kept fire on one side (integrity) and limited the temperature rise on the other side (insulation) for at least 60 minutes in a standard fire test.
Only products approved for external use, usually in a sealed unit with UV protection.
Survey timing in Pimlico depends on access, the size of the building and how urgent the defect is. Tell us your deadline when you enquire and we will confirm a date before you commit.
