Insulated fire glass, classified EI, is glazing that maintains integrity and keeps the temperature rise on the non-fire side within set limits for the rated time. It is usually made of several glass panes bonded with interlayers that foam into an insulating barrier when heated, or with a clear gel that absorbs heat.
Some EI products are internal only. External use needs a product and edge seal approved for UV and weather.
EI testing limits the average temperature rise on the unexposed face to 140°C and any single point to 180°C, which is why people can pass it.
Each step up in rating adds layers, so EI 120 is far thicker and heavier than EI 30. The frame has to be designed for it.
Whether the building is in central Elgin or the wider IV30 districts, we can survey and quote. We also cover Inverness, Aberdeen, Arbroath. Elgin is about 92 km from Aberdeen, the largest town in our Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray coverage.
We can phase work in Elgin around residents, staff or pupils, with out-of-hours options.
Designs follow the building and fire safety rules that apply in Scotland, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
You receive the classification references, glass marks and installation photographs for your fire safety records.
In Scotland, building work needs a building warrant under the Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004, with fire guidance in Section 2 of the Building Standards Technical Handbooks rather than Approved Documents.
For relevant premises, the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006 place duties on the duty holder to maintain fire safety measures, which include fire-resisting glazing.
Scottish guidance has its own approach to escape routes and compartmentation, so glazing designs are checked against the Technical Handbooks and the warrant drawings.
Insulated fire glass applies to many building types in Elgin, including care homes and industrial units.
