A fire-rated glazed screen is an internal wall made largely of glass that forms part of a fire-resisting construction, such as a corridor wall, a stair enclosure or a compartment wall. It lets daylight and sightlines through while holding back fire for the period the fire strategy requires.
We cover Cardiff and the surrounding postcode districts, including CF10, CF11, CF24, CF23, CF14. Nearby towns we also serve include Penarth, Caerphilly, Barry. Cardiff is the main town we cover in South Glamorgan.
Long screens under slabs need deflection heads so floor movement does not crack the glass or open gaps. The head detail has to come from the same evidence as the rest of the screen.
A door in a glazed screen has to be tested in that configuration or covered by a doorset certificate and an assessment for the screen. We specify the door and screen as one system rather than mixing products.
Test evidence covers the screen's connection to specific supporting constructions, such as masonry, concrete or a tested partition. Fixing into a lightweight wall that is not covered can undermine the rating, so we check the substrate first.
Building regulations are devolved in Wales, so fire safety design follows the Welsh Ministers' version of Approved Document B rather than the English one, alongside impact safety guidance for glazing.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 applies in Wales, so the responsible person must maintain fire-resisting glazing as part of the premises' fire safety measures. The Fire Safety Act 2021 confirmed this extends to the structure, external walls and flat entrance doors of multi-occupied residential buildings.
Wales is introducing its own building safety regime for occupied residential buildings, so check current Welsh requirements before planning major works to blocks of flats.
Every quote in Cardiff identifies the tested system: frame, glass, beads, seals and fixings, within its pane-size limits.
If an existing frame in a Cardiff building has no traceable evidence, we say so and price the options rather than guess.
Designs follow the building and fire safety rules that apply in Wales, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Fire-rated glazed screens applies to many building types in Cardiff, including healthcare buildings and blocks of flats.
It depends on the system's evidence. Most systems state maximum pane sizes and overall heights; very tall or wide screens may need an assessment from a test body. We confirm the limits during design.
Yes. Many screens are glazed from floor to ceiling, subject to the classification needed on that route and any impact safety requirements at low level.
Survey timing in Cardiff depends on access, the size of the building and how urgent the defect is. Tell us your deadline when you enquire and we will confirm a date before you commit.
Yes. We plan phasing, out-of-hours work and temporary protection so the building can stay in use where the fire strategy allows.
