Fire-rated curtain walling is a glazed facade system tested to resist fire, used where an external wall has to stop fire spreading to a neighbouring building, between floors, or past a protected stair or lobby. It combines facade performance, such as weather tightness and thermal values, with a fire classification.
External walls close to a boundary may need to be fire-resisting with limited unprotected areas. Fixed glazing that meets the wall's full fire-resistance requirement, including insulation where required, is not counted as unprotected area, so it can let you keep glass in those positions.
The gap between the curtain wall and each floor slab needs fire-stopping designed with the facade, not added afterwards.
Fire-rated units can still meet thermal targets when specified correctly; we confirm U-values with the system supplier.
Building regulations are devolved in Wales, so fire safety design follows the Welsh Ministers' version of Approved Document B rather than the English one, alongside impact safety guidance for glazing.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 applies in Wales, so the responsible person must maintain fire-resisting glazing as part of the premises' fire safety measures. The Fire Safety Act 2021 confirmed this extends to the structure, external walls and flat entrance doors of multi-occupied residential buildings.
Wales is introducing its own building safety regime for occupied residential buildings, so check current Welsh requirements before planning major works to blocks of flats.
Whether the building is in central Merthyr Tydfil or the wider CF47, CF48 districts, we can survey and quote. We also cover Aberdare, Rhondda, Ebbw Vale. Merthyr Tydfil is about 11 km from Rhondda, the largest town in our Mid Glamorgan coverage.
Designs follow the building and fire safety rules that apply in Wales, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Every quote in Merthyr Tydfil identifies the tested system: frame, glass, beads, seals and fixings, within its pane-size limits.
If an existing frame in a Merthyr Tydfil building has no traceable evidence, we say so and price the options rather than guess.
We can survey and quote for hotels, retail and leisure units and other building types in Merthyr Tydfil.
Typically where the facade is near a boundary, where it encloses a protected stair or lobby, or where fire spread between floors has to be controlled. The fire strategy sets the requirement.
We can supply and install on taller buildings where the project has the required approvals, and we provide evidence suitable for the Building Safety Regulator in England.
Survey timing in Merthyr Tydfil depends on access, the size of the building and how urgent the defect is. Tell us your deadline when you enquire and we will confirm a date before you commit.
