Integrity Fire Glass (E & EW): what you get in Leicestershire

Integrity fire glass, classified E, stops flames and hot gases passing for the rated time but does not limit the heat coming through. EW glass adds a cap on the heat radiated through the glass. Both are thinner, lighter and cheaper than fully insulated glass.

  • Polished wired glass where still appropriate
  • Matched beads and seals
  • Modified toughened integrity glass

What to check before ordering in Leicestershire

Where integrity glass fits

Integrity-only glass may be acceptable in some fire-resisting partitions, screens and doors, often at high level, within the limits national guidance sets. Compartment walls normally need insulating (EI) glazing.

Not insulating

E glass gets hot in a fire. Furniture or stored materials beside it can ignite from radiated heat.

Impact safety

Modern integrity glass is usually available with an impact classification, unlike plain wired glass.

Regulations for Leicestershire projects

England Which rules apply?

Building work in England is covered by the Building Regulations 2010, with fire safety guidance in Approved Document B and impact safety guidance for glazing in Approved Document K.

Once a building is in use, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to maintain fire safety measures, including fire-resisting glazing. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 add duties for multi-occupied residential buildings, including fire door checks in buildings over 11 metres.

In higher-risk buildings, broadly 18 metres or seven storeys with two or more homes, the Building Safety Regulator is the building control authority. England is also phasing out BS 476 references from Approved Document B, with the remaining fire-resistance references due to go in September 2029.

Integrity Fire Glass (E & EW) in Leicestershire: questions

Is integrity glass allowed on escape routes?

In limited amounts and positions. Building guidance sets the rules; insulating glass is used where those limits are exceeded.

What is the difference between E and EW glass?

EW glass also limits heat radiation through the glass, which reduces the risk to people and materials near it.

What is integrity-only fire glass?

Glass that stops flames and hot gases for the rated time but lets heat through. It is classified E.
