Insulated fire glass, classified EI, is glazing that maintains integrity and keeps the temperature rise on the non-fire side within set limits for the rated time. It is usually made of several glass panes bonded with interlayers that foam into an insulating barrier when heated, or with a clear gel that absorbs heat.
Insulating fire glass should be stored dry, upright and away from direct sun before fitting.
When heated, the interlayers turn opaque and expand, forming an insulating shield. After a fire the glass will need replacing.
EI testing limits the average temperature rise on the unexposed face to 140°C and any single point to 180°C, which is why people can pass it.
Building work in England is covered by the Building Regulations 2010, with fire safety guidance in Approved Document B and impact safety guidance for glazing in Approved Document K.
Once a building is in use, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to maintain fire safety measures, including fire-resisting glazing. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 add duties for multi-occupied residential buildings, including fire door checks in buildings over 11 metres.
In higher-risk buildings, broadly 18 metres or seven storeys with two or more homes, the Building Safety Regulator is the building control authority. England is also phasing out BS 476 references from Approved Document B, with the remaining fire-resistance references due to go in September 2029.

After survey you get a fixed written quote for the agreed scope, so Hinckley budgets are not open-ended.
Sector guides below cover schools and colleges, public buildings and other buildings in Hinckley.
Yes. Once the interlayers have reacted, the glass has done its job and must be replaced.
The glazing system kept fire on one side (integrity) and limited the temperature rise on the other side (insulation) for at least 60 minutes in a standard fire test.
Survey timing in Hinckley depends on access, the size of the building and how urgent the defect is. Tell us your deadline when you enquire and we will confirm a date before you commit.
Yes. We plan phasing, out-of-hours work and temporary protection so the building can stay in use where the fire strategy allows.
