Insulated fire glass, classified EI, is glazing that maintains integrity and keeps the temperature rise on the non-fire side within set limits for the rated time. It is usually made of several glass panes bonded with interlayers that foam into an insulating barrier when heated, or with a clear gel that absorbs heat.
Each step up in rating adds layers, so EI 120 is far thicker and heavier than EI 30. The frame has to be designed for it.
EI testing limits the average temperature rise on the unexposed face to 140°C and any single point to 180°C, which is why people can pass it.
When heated, the interlayers turn opaque and expand, forming an insulating shield. After a fire the glass will need replacing.
Building work in England is covered by the Building Regulations 2010, with fire safety guidance in Approved Document B and impact safety guidance for glazing in Approved Document K.
Once a building is in use, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to maintain fire safety measures, including fire-resisting glazing. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 add duties for multi-occupied residential buildings, including fire door checks in buildings over 11 metres.
In higher-risk buildings, broadly 18 metres or seven storeys with two or more homes, the Building Safety Regulator is the building control authority. England is also phasing out BS 476 references from Approved Document B, with the remaining fire-resistance references due to go in September 2029.
Our Hampshire coverage takes in Andover (SP10, SP11) and the neighbouring towns of Winchester, Newbury, Salisbury. Southampton, around 35 km from Andover, is the largest town in the same coverage area.
Designs follow the building and fire safety rules that apply in England, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
If an existing frame in a Andover building has no traceable evidence, we say so and price the options rather than guess.
After survey you get a fixed written quote for the agreed scope, so Andover budgets are not open-ended.
We can survey and quote for care homes, hotels and other building types in Andover.
The glazing system kept fire on one side (integrity) and limited the temperature rise on the other side (insulation) for at least 60 minutes in a standard fire test.
Yes, in normal conditions. It turns opaque only when heated in a fire.
Yes. We survey and install in Andover and across Hampshire, including the SP10 district and nearby Winchester.
We can give a guide range from photos and sizes, including a clear photo of any marks on the glass. A fixed price follows a survey.
