Fire-resistant glass is glazing that has been tested, as part of a complete glazed system, to hold back fire for a set time. It is classified by what it stops: E (integrity) keeps flames and hot gases on the fire side, EW also limits the heat radiated through the glass, and EI (integrity and insulation) also limits the temperature rise on the protected side, so people can pass it more safely.
Glass in doors, side panels and low-level positions has to meet impact safety rules as well as the fire rating. Most modern fire glass carries an impact classification; old wired glass usually does not.
Many insulating fire glasses use interlayers that need protecting from UV and moisture, so external positions need a product approved for exterior use, with the right edge seal and glazing system.
No. A frame is only rated with the glass types and pane sizes it was tested or assessed with. We check the frame's evidence before quoting, and if the existing frame is unknown we say so and price the options.
Our Lincolnshire coverage takes in Skegness (PE25) and the neighbouring towns of Boston, King's Lynn, Spalding. Skegness lies roughly 59 km from Lincoln, within our Lincolnshire coverage.
If an existing frame in a Skegness building has no traceable evidence, we say so and price the options rather than guess.
You receive the classification references, glass marks and installation photographs for your fire safety records.
After survey you get a fixed written quote for the agreed scope, so Skegness budgets are not open-ended.
Building work in England is covered by the Building Regulations 2010, with fire safety guidance in Approved Document B and impact safety guidance for glazing in Approved Document K.
Once a building is in use, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to maintain fire safety measures, including fire-resisting glazing. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 add duties for multi-occupied residential buildings, including fire door checks in buildings over 11 metres.
Sector guides below cover schools and colleges, public buildings and other buildings in Skegness.
Ordinary toughened safety glass is not. It can shatter early in a fire. Fire-resistant integrity glass is specially processed or formulated and only gains a rating when fitted in a tested frame and glazing system.
Our service is supply and installation, because the rating depends on how the glass is fitted. For trade buyers we can quote supply of cut-to-size panes with the matching glazing materials on request.
