Insulated Fire Glass (EI)
EI 30 to EI 120 glass that blocks heat as well as flames.
Learn more →Fire-resistant glass in Consett is usually needed for one of three reasons: new building work, a change to an existing fire-resisting wall, or defects found in an inspection. We handle all three.

Fire-resistant glass is glazing that has been tested, as part of a complete glazed system, to hold back fire for a set time. It is classified by what it stops: E (integrity) keeps flames and hot gases on the fire side, EW also limits the heat radiated through the glass, and EI (integrity and insulation) also limits the temperature rise on the protected side, so people can pass it more safely.
The fire strategy or building control drawings set the rating for each element. Integrity-only glass is cheaper and thinner, but its use on escape routes is restricted; insulating glass carries far fewer restrictions because people can pass it safely during a fire.
Most fire glass is permanently marked with its product and classification. We record the marks, pane sizes and evidence references on handover so whoever is responsible for fire safety can show what is installed.
No. A frame is only rated with the glass types and pane sizes it was tested or assessed with. We check the frame's evidence before quoting, and if the existing frame is unknown we say so and price the options.
Building work in England is covered by the Building Regulations 2010, with fire safety guidance in Approved Document B and impact safety guidance for glazing in Approved Document K.
Once a building is in use, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to maintain fire safety measures, including fire-resisting glazing. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 add duties for multi-occupied residential buildings, including fire door checks in buildings over 11 metres.
In higher-risk buildings, broadly 18 metres or seven storeys with two or more homes, the Building Safety Regulator is the building control authority. England is also phasing out BS 476 references from Approved Document B, with the remaining fire-resistance references due to go in September 2029.
Our County Durham coverage takes in Consett (DH8) and the neighbouring towns of Stanley, Newburn, Chester-le-Street. Consett lies roughly 41 km from Darlington, within our County Durham coverage.
You receive the classification references, glass marks and installation photographs for your fire safety records.
We can phase work in Consett around residents, staff or pupils, with out-of-hours options.
If an existing frame in a Consett building has no traceable evidence, we say so and price the options rather than guess.
Fire-resistant glass applies to many building types in Consett, including blocks of flats and industrial units.
E is integrity only: it stops flames and hot gases passing for the rated time. EW adds a limit on radiated heat through the glass. EI adds insulation, keeping the unexposed face below set temperature rises so people can pass it safely. The number after the letters is the time in minutes.
Integrity glass can be similar in thickness to standard glass. Insulating glass is laminated from several layers, so it gets markedly thicker and heavier as the rating increases from EI 30 to EI 120.
Building work in Consett follows the Building Regulations 2010 and Approved Document B, and occupied buildings are covered by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Yes. We plan phasing, out-of-hours work and temporary protection so the building can stay in use where the fire strategy allows.
